Introduction

Technology is everywhere yet we do so little to protect ourselves from hackers. It is extremely easy to get personal information through the electronics we use everyday. Credit card information, social security number, photos, and login information to applications and services are just a few of the things a hacker can get into.

Software Piracy

Software Piracy is the illegal copying, distribution, or use of software. According to the Business Software Alliance (BSA), about 36% of all software in current use is stolen. Software piracy causes significant lost revenue for publishers, which in turn results in higher prices for the consumer. To protect the rights of software publishers, publishers have to employ the use of legal protection through user agreements, product keys, tamperproofing, and watermarking; but most importantly, us consumers have to create a culture where piracy is not encouraged.

Copyright

Copyright is the exclusive right given to the creator of a creative work to reproduce the work, usually for a limited time. Copyright is intended to protect the original expression. As media is becoming more and more widespread, the importance of copyright is coming up to the surface. Protection can be done by the original creator through registration through the U.S. Copyright Office, but the consumer has to create a culture where copyright infringement is not encouraged and original work is respectfully protected.
